What is an ideal MIM Profile?

A lot of students wish to find the answer to this million dollar question: what is an ideal MIM profile to break into a top Masters in Management program?

A friend of mine told me he secured a 750 on the GMAT and wanted to know if this would be sufficient to crack a top school for the Masters in Management degree. This article identifies certain trends in the admission procedure, based on a survey of 70+ students pursuing MSc Management (Masters in Management).

GMAT / GRE / other tests

The test score is often considered a very important part of the application, much like the presence of Virat Kohli in the Indian batting lineup overseas. A 700+ GMAT score gives a slight edge, but a closer look reveals that even a score between 650 and 700 gives the applicant a fighting chance if the academic record and other aspects of the profile are strong. Interestingly, admission is also possible with a GRE score of 315+, which is very relevant for people who find it difficult to score above 650 on the GMAT.

GPA

The academic record is integral to the application. On a 10 point scale, anything above 7 gives a decent shot at admission. A grade below 7 has to be compensated by solid extra-curricular activities and internships, or a stellar GMAT/GRE score, to enhance the possibility of admission into a top 10 Masters in Management program.

Work experience

There is a decent mix of people with 0 to 3 years of work experience; the sweet spot seems to be about 1 year. Notably, among freshers, about 80% of successful applicants had at least one previous internship. Full time experience may not be mandatory, but internship experience during the bachelor degree significantly enhances the chances of admission.

Bachelor degree

Academic diversity is a key highlight of the MIM program: like the balance between Indian and overseas players in the IPL, top MIM schools strive to maintain a mixed class. Business majors outnumber most other backgrounds, with engineers not far behind, and fields like law and psychology completing the class distribution. It is very important to differentiate your profile, particularly if you come from a business or engineering background, and prove you are a good fit for the school and the program.

International experience

About 41% of survey respondents had some international experience: internships, study terms, volunteer activities or short trips abroad. The MIM classroom brings together many ethnic backgrounds, so prior exposure to a multicultural environment gives a real edge.
